New Year’s Inspiration

OPEN FOR THE FUTURE

A woman in a retirement home was given a party to celebrate her one hundredth birthday. Many came to offer their congratulations. Everyone was enjoying this very festive occasion, especially the women. A reporter had come to interview her. He asked the high-spirited, one-hundred-year-old woman, “Do you have any children?”
She replied, without hesitation, “Not yet!”

We laugh or at least snicker at the wit of this lady. But why do we laugh? It is because of the impossibility of the situation. It would be ridiculous to even consider the possibility. It is absurd and unthinkable. If we thought for a moment that the lady was serious we would say that she had lost her mental capacities.
However, I remember that Sarah laughed when the angels told Abraham that they were going to have to set up a nursery. I remember that Zechariah became speechless when He found out that Elizabeth would start knitting booties. Even Mary had a hard time believing her angelic announcement.
Yet each time something impossible happened. The only explanation we have is that God wanted it to happen. Maybe we should remember the words of the angel when Mary asked him how all of this could be and he replied, “For nothing is impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37)

As we approach 2011, we will face many different situations. Some will be difficult and some will be outright impossible. Let us remember, as God’s people should, that we serve a God who loves impossibility and revels in the ridiculous. If we seek His will and listen to His voice, there’s no telling what could happen.
